Hi Gash ( HI ALL )

Sorry, I have been silent on the forum for the past 12 - 18 month sometimes life just gets in the way. Have been brewing the whole time.
Ok I brewed a light Lager that I got from this forum brewed is twice now and both times had problems reaching the start gravity on 1.051 I use the grainfather app for most of my recipes and both time could only get a start gravity of 1.039 and hoping to find out why so can you put this recipe into BEERSMITH and see if you get the same readings as I do

Light lager

4.5kg of Pale Malt ( 2 row)
0.5kg of Corn Sugar ( dextrose )

20 grams Pride of Ringwood
Saflager Lager Yeast

65 min boil adding hops at 60 min and whirlfloc at 10min

This is the only beer I have not hit my targets I generally have my Grainfather 35lt system down and know exactly what's happening through the brew. Attached Recipe as a pdf

Regards Ricco

Hi Ricco
Put it in Beersmith and came out as 1.053.
If all your other recipes are ok, someone more intelligent than me will need to help :-)

Hi Cherry1
thank you as i suspected your getting the same reading as i am.

My first thought was the grain crush but i had my local brew shop crush the grain this time and showed them a sample of my grain crush they told me my crush was perfect.

The beer itself is good a nice lager. i just don't know what the ABV really is i will keep digging into it.

Thanks Mate

My first thought was Grain crush but now you pointed out water and PH. I have just started using my reverse osmosis water filter I think this is the problem my PH is 5.3

Should i be adding something to my water?

Is that just water ph before adding anything? If that’s starting ph yes you should be adding things, my guess with grain added for say a pale ale your mash ph is probably pretty low.

Yep my PH 5.3 that is just the water
i have yet to test the PH with grain added

So what do i need to add to the water to get the right PH in the mash?

It depends on your grain bill, do you use any software for brewing recipes?

Brewing a familiar Dark Mild later today. (hint: Was the bastard tired? Or was he run over by a tire (tyre). No one really knows). One thing for sure. It will be a treat when done. Cheers!
