Bobbi Meyer's Irish Stout Is Dead R.I.P. was created by Dullahan Brewing
A little while ago i made my first foray into all grain brewing. I did a BIAB Irish stout receipe given me by Bobbi Meyer off youtube.Long story short(please don't fall over laughing) i had to do 5 seperate one gallon batches using no chill method and combine all 5 in a 33lt fermenter before pitching yeast starter.

Last few weeks all seemed to be going fine though i had a lot of spongy looking trub settling in primary.Transferred to secondary about a week ago and lost 4 litres due to this trub. However i did not notice anything off at that stage except a strong waft of something when i opened primary but after ten minutes it was all but gone.

Well as can be seen from the pictures when i checked up on the stout in secondary this morning i found her to be very sick indeed. No stinky smells but that is most definitely an infection. Down the drain it went, not worth risking it in my book.

hmmm I still would of tested it if you could bottle without disturbing the floaters, not many bugs can survive in beer once its brewed, nothing really bad for us humans. How did you pour it into your secondary? Didnt splash it too much? One day I might secondary again I havent found any difference in my beers, especially my ales and big beers like stouts, since I stopped. (not saying thats where it was from) just raving lol.

Too late i dumped the lot  If it happens again i will not be so hasty. I was pissed off when i saw it and chucked it down the drain in a fit. Syphoned it from primary to secondary, no excessive splashing. Plenty starsan used, cant figure it out tbh. Oh well i will know for next time, at least it was not too uch money wasted anyway.

How long was it in the primary?

Sometimes the act of transferring will stir the yeast into action again, and sometimes this can resemble the pictures you posted, but I agree it does look like mould.

It was in primary 3.5 weeks Gash and only in secondary 9 days. Cant figure out how it got infected though as i thought i was being real careful. Tell ya what i am having my doubts about doing this secondary in the future, not sure if its worth the risk, Cheers.

In my opinion after 3.5 weeks in the primary, secondary is unnecessary.

Brewing a familiar Dark Mild later today. (hint: Was the bastard tired? Or was he run over by a tire (tyre). No one really knows). One thing for sure. It will be a treat when done. Cheers!
