I am going to age my next batch in a 5 gallon new oak barrel. My question is how long do you think I should leave it in the barrel?

I have heard people aging beers in Barrels anywhere from a few months to over a year! I guess a small taste now and then till you think its right. I have heard people getting great flavours after having scotch or bourbon in the barrel for a few months first, then changing it to beer after that. Cheerz!

Good call Gash.

A friend of mine had aged an homemade port in a new (French oak) 5ltr barrel for about a year. A month later he had a Dark Ale in it for 3 months (secondary? not sure how it was done exactly) then pulled it and bottled conditioned it for another month. Compared to the originals that were bottled from day one, there was a massive difference in taste. Hard to describe, wouldn't say oaky or porty but defo not the same brew in the end. Be good to see how your comparisons go lilfear.

You would have to put it in the barrel as a second stage cause you cant let it wait til fermentation is finished.

mate you should be able to get a used whisky barrel over there no worries, but not sure about 5 gallons, more like 50 for an ex Kentucky barrel etc.
Have you considered buying a new one (American Oak) and charring it yourself? could be a goer

I have already talked to my local homebrew supply store, they can get me a brand new 5 gallon barrel for cheap....but I cant afford to buy enough whiskey to put inside the barrel to get that flavor

Brewing a familiar Dark Mild later today. (hint: Was the bastard tired? Or was he run over by a tire (tyre). No one really knows). One thing for sure. It will be a treat when done. Cheers!
