This recipe is a starting point for you to experiment with , I've kept the hop bill low to start with, you might like more hops or less! I have contacted James Squire and if they reply on a few of my questions I may adjust the recipe.

1.7 kg Coopers Australian Pale Ale (6.7 EBC) Extract 6 50.0 %
1 kg Wheat Liquid Extract (15.8 EBC) Extract 7 29.4 %
500 g Light Dry Extract (15.8 EBC) Dry Extract 2 14.7 %
200.00 g Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (118.2 EBC) Grain 1 5.9 %

15.00 g Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] - Boil 10.0 min Hop 3 4.5 IBUs
15.00 g Nelson Sauvin [12.00 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 4 3.5 IBUs
20.00 g Willamette [5.50 %] - Boil 1.0 min Hop 5 0.5 IBUs

Steep the crystal for 30mins in a couple of litres of water at around 70c
Strain and rinse grain, discard the grain and top up with water to 3 litres
Dissolve the Light Dry Malt in the water and bring to the boil
Once boiling add the Amarillo Hops and boil for 5mins
Then add the Nelson Sauvin Hops and boil for 4mins
Then add the Willamette and boil for 1min
Pour into the fermenter and mix in the 2 tins of extract.
Top up fermenter to 20 litres with cold water.
Check the temperature and adjust with tap water, refrigerated cold water or hot water to around 18c-20c
Add yeast the kit yeast can be used although you may get a better result using Safale US-05 or Wyeast 1056.
Ferment at 18c-20c for at least 10 days, 14 preferably.
Bottle or Keg as usual.

Enjoy!

Nice recipe Gash, its a good beer.....

Might work on a All Grain Version, you would bitter it with a 60 min addition of Nelson to give around 18IBU of bitterness as thats around what the cans have, then follow the same hop profile.

Im not sure if a pale malt would be a bit dark.... maybe the JWM Traditional Ale malt and JWM Wheat

This is What iv come up with:

23L Batch
OG 1042
29 IBU
12.6 EBC
EST Abv 4.4

2200g JWM Pale Malt 5.9ebc
1500g JWM Wheat Malt 3.5ebc
200g Crystal 60 118ebc
100g Victory malt (biscuit) 55.2ebc

11g Nelson Sauvin @ 60 (18.7ibu)
15g Amarillo Gold @ 10 (5.6ibu)
15g Nelson Sauvin @ 5 (4.3ibu)
20g Willamette @ 1 (0.6ibu)

Safale S-04 Yeast @ 18 Degrees

i wouldnt mind giving it a crack, its a nice beer but a bit hollow out of the bottle.... the biscuit malt might fill the void

Hey gash I have read that to optimize hop utilization you should boil in a 1.040 wort. In the recipe you say to boil in 3l of water with 500g of malt wouldn't that be a higher gravity? Sorry to question you I just like to know why I'm doing things so I can learn more. I'm hoping to put this one on tomorrow that is if my wife doesn't go into Labour lol she is due on Monday and I just know its gunna start as soon as I get my brew on

Yep technically you are right. But it's not such an issue when using hops just for flavour and aroma as in this recipe. Plain water actually has the best utilisation, but we boil in wort because they say that the hops 'sticks' to the water better and not so much is lost during fermentation. The usual is around 100g to a litre, but 500g into 3 litres is fine, the main reason I did that was just to make it easier then having to weigh two lots of malt etc. Also, the program I used to put the recipe together takes all the hop utilisation into account.

drinking this one right now and it is very tasty :P its not exactly like 150 lashes but i did use Moutika instead of Amarillo and its still a really good drop and not far off the real deal(probably better actually).

Hey Gash,

I did up your recipe a couple of months ago, just drinking it now. Not quite exactly like 150 Lashes, but not far off and it's still a pretty good drop.

Gave some to a mate the other day and he reckoned it was a little thick (I haven't noticed). Do you think replacing the LDME with dextrose, or 250g LDME and 250g dex would thin it out a bit without affecting the flavour too much?

I'll probably make it again next week (once I finish off this batch so I can use the keg for another brew currently in the fermenter) and thought I might drop the boil down to 5 mins to reduce the bitterness slightly but up the hop quantity. Probably a bit more amarillo.

yep I reckon either way is worth a try, 250g/250g or swap the whole 500g for dex, I think that would help. and trying the different things with the hops sounds good too. all worth a try in my opinion. cheerz hope it works out!
