Hey Gash.
I put down an extract version of this as i cannot mash much more than 2kg of grain at the moment ( need a robo brew/ urn). I only just kegged it today 14 days old. Fermented as per your video Under pressure in an old 23lt keg i have.
Its the best beer i have made to date.
I have noticed though it has a lingering bitterness thats a little unpleasant.
Could you look over my recipe and maybe give me a few tips on it?

2.5kg light dry malt added at end of boil 5 mins
700g Weyermanns Malt: Munich T1 (what i could get) mash 60min 5lt water @65
200g Bestmalz: Caramel Light Malt (what i could get) mash 60min
20g fist wort hop (20min stand @ 65) Citra
25g 10min boil Citra
75g 1min boil Citra
US-05 yeast
added to fermenter and brought up to 21L with cold water.
75g Dry hop on day 5
14 days in fermenter.

Umm, It may have something to do with the boil, not sure what the gravity was you were at, interesting how you tried to do the first wort hop, I have never tried it like that. Really hard to say. Thats probably obvious it was something to do with the boil, but hard for me to pinpoint.
Could be water things, but I'd say its boil process, I am planning a extract version, but I was going to start with a tin.
Hopefully it might settle down in a few days or a week. Cheers!

it has settled down a lot. i feel it may have just been hop burn.
gravity started at 1053 and fiished close to 1014.

yeah as for the first wort hop i just took the grain bag out and added the hops and left stand for about 20mins.
next time i will put it back in the oven @65 to make sure it holds temp.
It is also really light in colour but smell and is starting to taste so much better.
Im going to give it a week in the keg to settle and then see how is is after that.

Cheers

Gave this a go a couple of weeks ago and had a sample last night. I no chilled so would imagine would taste different to a batch that was chilled. Anyhow i love it! Cheers for sharing. I am looking forward to your Jedi Juice recipe.

G’day Gash,
If I was to do this in the robobrew, what water additions should I do if I’m using spring water?
Chloride- 40
Sodium- 32
Bicarbonate- 6
Magnesium- 4.2
Calcium- 1
Potassium- 1.2
Sulphate- 25
This is the water I use, I’m just starting to dip my toes into the water chemistry side of things, all my beers have came out good using this spring water but have just done one of my normal recipes using my tap water with a softener and it came out terrible, real bitter aftertaste.
Cheers.

Ok, so those numbers there, is that the spring water, the adjusted spring water or your tap water? Sorry bit confused, but for an ipa I'd push the sulphate-chloride ratio to about 2:1 or 3:1. So get the sulphate to around 200 and chloride to 50-100. some people really push it for ipas 300 and 50 6:1.. but I think 2:1 or 3:1 is a good place to start. I can help you more with that later. Any beer program will have profiles built in but they can really push the boundaries. depends what you are after I guess

Yeah that’s the bottled spring water I’m using, it’s just what’s written on the container. I’m so green when it comes to water chemistry, but am keen to learn and make my beer as good as it can be. I’ve just downloaded ez water and will start to experiment a bit.

Something like this, this is for 35L
Baking Soda (NaHCO3) 10.26 g
Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) 0.55 g
Canning Salt (NaCl) 0.13 g
Chalk (CaCO3) 1.60 g
Epsom Salts (MgSO4) 0.25 g
Gypsum (CaSO4) 7.44 g

Canning salt is just regular salt, cooking salt, not iodised

Brewing a familiar Dark Mild later today. (hint: Was the bastard tired? Or was he run over by a tire (tyre). No one really knows). One thing for sure. It will be a treat when done. Cheers!
