HELP!

So I I've done a few brews now. Probably 6 in the robobrew, and the beer just isn't cutting it. Where does all my hop flavour/aroma go??? I add plenty of hops to my beer usually around 100 - 150g in boil and 100 - 200+ in dry hop. Even when I go to bottle my beer. No hop aroma at all. At least not a nice one. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Please help, I'm getting sick of pouring bitter bland beers down the drain.

Beers on my Robobrew have never been that bad that I've had to dump them. You sure that the excess bitterness in not from contamination?
Try ramping up your late kettle and whirlpool additions to boost flavour/aroma.
Try LupuLN2 hops - concentrated form of pellet.
Look at your salt additions and water adjustments also.
Keep us posted! Good luck.

Hi Ichang,
That is a fair amount of hops not to get any hop aroma. Assume you are using pellets, how are you storing them?
How does it taste before fermentation and after? Does it change between either of those two and after bottling/kegging?
Do you throw the hops directly into the Robobrew/fermenter or do you use a hop spider or bag?
As Portas says, I have had a few beers that have not turned out exactly as wanted, but nothing to pour down the drain.
Cheers.

Hi cherry,

- I store my hops vacuume sealed and in the freezer
- tastes fine before fermentation
- doesn’t taste that promising after fermentation. Just put that down to all the yeast at the bottom
- hops go into a hop spider

The beer never looks infected after fermentation. I started adjusting water to help but that doesn’t seem to help. I’m lost

Hey mate, can you give us the last recipe you werent happy with and we can go from there. It could be the style of hop you are using not being what you want. Also what taste are you after im sure we can all help. It may be water chem like Ca SO4 or Cacl2 or more likely the ph of your sparge water. Often we need to brew a smash beer to test what hops and water chem works best. cheers.Really keen to try and help here, its a common issue.

Hi Ichang,
As Finn notes it would be good to know the exact recipe you have had problems with.
If it tastes ok before fermentation, immediate question would be, how are you controlling fermentation temperature? As far as I am concerned the most critical aspect of brewing beer is fermentation temperature control. You can cock up many things and the beer will turn out drinkable, but if fermentation temp is all over the place, then you are pushing sh!t up hill.
Also, you say you are using a hop spider, what about in the fermentation vessel? I just throw them in then cold crash to make the hops drop.
Throwing away beer is sacrilege, we are here to help :-).
Cheers
Chris

Hey Guys. Sorry for the late reply.

Okay so recipe I did is as follows:

- 300g rice hulls
- 4kg of Gladfield Ale Malt
- 0.6kg of Bestmalz wheat malt
- 0.5kg of flaked oats
- 0.3kg of Munich light (Joe White)

Hops:
- 15g POR @ 60min
- 50g of Galaxy @10min
- 50g Amarillo @ 10min
- 50g Galaxy @ whirpool
- Safale US-05
- 100g of Galaxy dry hop after 5 days for 4 days
- 80g of Amarillo dry hop after 5 days for 4 days

Rough Estimates cus I was king of just making this one up as I went, but I would say those are pretty accurate.

Mash Water: 20L
Gypsum: 2.2g
Calcium: 5.5g
Epsom Salt: 1.1g

Sparge Water: 11L
Gypsum: 1.1g
Calcium: 2.8g
Epsom Salt: 0.6g

Water Profile after salt additions:
Calcium: 128
Magnesium: 10
Sodium: 16
Sulfate: 83
Chloride: 194
Biocarbonate: 43

FYI this was the first time I adjusted water. Usually I just leave it with pretty much the same result.

Mash at 66 degrees for 75 min No mash out. Aerated by shaking for a few min. Pitched yeast.

Fermented in a fridge with temp control at 20 degrees I think. Bottled
Regarding water PH I have no idea. Starting PH based on my water reports is 7.8.
I think thats everything you asked for?

What about it? Just a regular hop spider from keg-king I think.

Brewing a familiar Dark Mild later today. (hint: Was the bastard tired? Or was he run over by a tire (tyre). No one really knows). One thing for sure. It will be a treat when done. Cheers!
