Hello everyone. Ive just spied some lovely looking fresh mussels in their shells and I thought, as you do, could I brew a Mussel Stout?. Ive had many Oyster stouts made by 3 Boys brewery here in Christchurch. Very nice.
Should I put the mussels and shells in the mash or the boil.? Any ideas anyone? I remember watching a Gash video brewing with I think oyster shells in the mash I think. Has anyone brewed a mussel stout? also i ,m very keen on any ideas. Cheers.

So I found Gashes video on oyster stout so if you are interested here it is.

So im going to go with 300 gms of mussels shells and all at 20 minutes in my Oat Meal stout ive been making. Its a 22 litre batch . Wish me luck. cheers

I went very well thanks. Put the mussels in at 20 minutes shells and all. Hit all my numbers bang on. Tried to eat the mussels after transfer but were way to bitter due to sitting in the hops. But no off flavours detected in the mussels or the wort. Fermenting was well underway next morning at 19 degC and will turn it up to 22C tomorrow. All going well. Cheers

Kit Brew Day Tomorrow, Black Rock Pale ale and number 40 larger brew enhancer by mangrove jacks. And possibly some honey. Yeast US05 ??

Brewing a familiar Dark Mild later today. (hint: Was the bastard tired? Or was he run over by a tire (tyre). No one really knows). One thing for sure. It will be a treat when done. Cheers!
